The South Florida Anglers For Everglades
Restoration has accomplished a lot in a short time and you can help the
organization achieve more goals by fishing in its bass tournament.
SAFER's fifth annual "Save Our Canals"
bass tournament is Sunday out of Everglades Holiday Park. Proceeds of the
tournament help SAFER in its fight to keep the canals in the Everglades open to
fishing. When the restoration of the Everglades was first considered, the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District planned
on filling the canals so water in the 'Glades would flow more naturally.
SAFER pointed out how great the fishing
for bass and panfish can be in the canals and what a tremendous recreational
opportunity those canals provide. It took time, but the agencies listened and
started figuring out ways to restore the Everglades without ruining the fishing.
"We've established a good working relationship with the Corps," SAFER president
Al Ovies said. "They listen to us and we can work with them to achieve our goals
of keeping the canals open to fishing."
