Accomplishments

Since the June 12, 2001 inception of South Florida Anglers For Everglades Restoration (S.A.F.E.R.),  we, as one organized voice of the 30 + Bass Clubs, hundreds of weekend anglers, local guides and area fishing / marine businesses in the Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, have made a significant impact with the US Army Corps. of Engineers (COE) and the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in understanding our issues with the proposed plan of filling in the canals.

S.A.F.E.R. has also accomplished much in the area of educating the angling community about the Everglades Restoration Plan and organizing them into one (1) very strong determined voice.

A few of these accomplishments include:

Organized the angling community and created S.A.F.E.R..  We meet every second Tuesday of the month, Bass Pro Shops, Dania Florida, 7:30 PM in the back break room.
Registered S.A.F.E.R. as a Florida Non-Profit Corporation and obtain tax exempt status with the US treasury.
Have been, and continue to be published in several publications about our issues with the Everglades Restoration.  These include:
Sun Sentinel
Miami Herald
Palm Beach Post
Bassmaster Magazine
Bass Times Magazine
Sports-A-Field
Florida Sportsman
The City Fisher

Monthly meeting updates to the local 30 + Bass Clubs and hundreds of weekend anglers in the form of E-Mail's and US Postage.
Set up the S.A.F.E.R. booth at the Bass Pro Shops Fall Hunting Classic August 1-4, 2001 to educate the public.  During this event we obtained over 2,000 signatures supporting our concerns with the Everglades Restoration Plan.
S.A.F.E.R. has attended and spoken at several Public Meetings held by the COE and SFWMD concerning the Everglades Restoration project.
Speakers with presentations attending our monthly meeting have included:
US Army Corps. of Engineers
South Florida Management District
US Fish & Wildlife Service
B.A.S.S.
Florida Wildlife Federation
Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission
National Parks Conservation Association
United Waterfowlers of Florida
Florida House of Representatives

Set up the S.A.F.E.R. booth at the Bass Pro Shops Spring Fishing Classic February 20-24, 2002 and educated the public about S.A.F.E.R. and the Everglades Restoration Plan.
S.A.F.E.R. has become an official stakeholder in the Everglades Restoration Project.  This gives us a direct link with the COE and SFWMD concerning the project.
S.A.F.E.R. was instrumental in the creation of the Recreational Master Plan Team within the COE.  S.A.F.E.R. is a participating group within the Team and attends their meetings giving valuable input about the recreational activities in the Everglades.
May 2002, planted four (4) S.A.F.E.R. signs (see below).

Locations of these signs are as follows:

L-67A (Big "L") boat ramp off Tamiami Trail.
L-67C (Little "L" or Magic Canal) boat ramp off Tamiami Trail.
Front boat ramp at Everglades Holiday Park.
Rear boat ramp at Everglades Holiday Park.

These signs have been instrumental in the efforts of S.A.F.E.R. to inform the public.  We receive calls weekly.

May 26, 2002 "Save Our Canals" Tournament.  This was a joint effort of all the Bass Clubs in the area.  Ninety Four (94) boats were entered.  Tambour L. Eller and Brice McKoy with the COE fished as guests of S.A.F.E.R..  Steve Waters with the Sun Sentinel also fished as a guest.  Some say it was the most organized tournament they have fished in a long time.
The creation of this web site and a brochure that will offer hats, shirts, patches and decals.
