Activities |

Meetings
are always held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at
the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World back room, 7:30 PM
in Dania Florida. Our meetings are open to the public, and all
interested parties are urged to attend.
S.A.F.E.R. is involved in many activities
to promote public awareness of the issues concerning the Everglades
restoration. Our multi-faceted agenda
includes, but is not limited to, the activities listed below.

Web hosting and development.
|
|
|
This web site
is used to keep the angling community informed of what is going on with the
Everglades Restoration pertaining to WCA 3 and
our recreational rights. It will keep you
updated about all the pertinent CERP projects,
the agencies involved in restoration, upcoming public meetings, SAFER
meetings and other SAFER events. |

Representation at Agency
Meetings |
|
|
The bulk of our
work continues to be representing SAFER at the
meetings of the various participating agencies. As
official stakeholders in the CERP process, our
representatives attend the Project Design Teams
(PDT's) of projects such as Decomp, Master
Recreation Plan and the South Florida Restoration
Task Force. It was SAFER's particpation which was
instrumental in the creation of the MRP. We are
members of SFWMD's WRAC Recreational Issues
Subcommittee, where our participation has helped to
open up SFWMD controlled land to all forms of
recreational activity. And, of course, we are there
to speak our minds at the many Public Meetings. |

Media Articles |
|
|
SAFER, and its
stance on Everglades Restoration, has had
articles published in many national and state
publications. Among these are Bassmasters and BASS
Times Magazines, Florida Sportsman, Sports Afield,
and FWC's The City Fisher. In addition, articles
concerning SAFER have appeared in the tri-county
regions newspapers—The Fort
Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, The Miami Herald and The
Palm Beach Post. Many of these articles can be
viewed in the "Media Articles" section of this web
site.

Angler and General Public Awareness.
|
|
|
We started out as a grassroots organization
in 1992, setting up a booth at the Bass Pro Shop's
Fishing Classic Weekend, and have never forgotten
our roots—the recreational fisherman accessing the
Everglades.
Through booths at sporting shows, literature distributions, and
informational mailings we gathered over 2000 signatures on a petition
clearly stating our beliefs on Everglades
Restoration, and submitted it to the COE at a Public
Meeting. Our efforts have attracted
local, regional and national media
attention, and have earned the respect of
the government agencies responsible for
CERP as far as the halls of Washington D.C. . |

 |
Annual "Save Our Canals"
Bass Fishing Tournament |
|
|
Our annual bass
tournament continues to be a one of the most
important means of getting our message across to the
participating government agencies. Each year we
invite members of the agency teams to see and
experience first hand, the awesome fishery which we
all enjoy, and is so much a part of our lifestyle.
Over the years, we have hosted team members from the
Corps of Engineers, SFWMD, and the Department of the
Interior, representing Everglades National Park, the
National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service. |

Liaison with Environmental
Groups |
|
|
The past few years
has seen SAFER make a concerted effort to
communicate our agenda to the environmental
community. Like them, we share a basic core value:
we are here to protect the habitat. SAFER has
participated in several discussion panels hosted by
the National Parks Conservation Association, and
attended the annual conference of the Everglades
Coalition. We will continue to develop these lines
of communication, and hope to overcome the mutual
distrust which, in the past, has characterized
the relationship between the environmental community
and the sportsmen accessing the Everglades for
recreational purposes.
